Baldwin launched its new industry podcast, Unlocking Potential, which will focus on trends and innovations in printing technology and industrial process automation and enhancement.

Host Tyler Kern chatted with Baldwin’s Chief Commercial Officer Peter Hultberg and Chief Marketing and IoT Officer, Steve Metcalf, to give listeners insight into Baldwin’s history and evolution.

Baldwin, fueled by 100 years of innovation, has continued to reinvent itself as its target markets changed. A focus on innovation and evolution has been critical to the company’s success.

Hultberg, a 20+ year employee, gave some backstory.

“The first product, invented by founder William Gegenheimer, was a press cleaner. That was the start, and, by the 1950s, the company was growing, including businesses in Japan, Germany, the UK, China, and India,” Hultberg said.

“The founding of the company was about innovation with continued expansions on ideas into process automation,” Metcalf said.

Their focus on commercial printing began to shift as those markets began to shrink with the adoption of digital channels. Packaging became the new frontier, followed by textiles, film extrusion and more. The company has applications and solutions for the entire spectrum of printing and categorizes itself as a technology company above all else.

Metcalf joined the company after Baldwin acquired his company that specialized in UV curing for industrial printing. Acquisitions of very specific products like Metcalf’s have enabled the company to stay competitive and meet the market.

The next horizon is data. As the IoT Officer, Metcalf spoke about this development.

“We’re taking all the standalone segments and merging them through an IoT platform. Connecting technology brings additional value, as data delivers insights. Companies care about consistency and their branding in printing, and this unlocks information,” he explained.

Concluding the conversation, the guests talked about why the company started a podcast.

“What’s lacking right now is the trade shows and person-to-person networking. The idea with the podcast is to start sharing information conversationally and talk about applications, ideas and trends,” Metcalf said.
