Digital intelligence platform connects data from disparate pressroom assets, accelerating the arrival of Industry 4.0 in the graphics industry
The recent Digital Packaging Summit was a welcome opportunity to reunite senior managers and business executives in label, folding carton, flexible packaging and corrugated printing and converting to explore how current and future digital production printing technology, software and solutions will impact their business and investment decisions.
The summit, presented annually by Printing United Alliance and Napco Media, was even more alive with innovation this time around since it has been two years since the annual event was last held due to the COVID pandemic. Additionally, the opportunities to network and socialize with the oceanfront backdrop of the grand Ponte Vedra Inn in Ponte Vedra, FL, were second to none.
As a supplier and a sponsor, Baldwin left DPS gaining as much insight from the November event as we shared by meeting with and learning from brands, end users and fellow suppliers.
Baldwins’ experts showcased our entire suite of data-connected technologies that work in harmony to produce superior labels and flexible and corrugated packaging.
They range from corona surface treatment and UV and LED curing to 100% inspection and defect detection/removal, to in-line color measurement, along with advanced real-time and historical process monitoring via Baldwin’s cutting-edge AMP Internet-of-Things (IoT) software platform.
A shining moment for Baldwin was being selected as a finalist for the Best Sponsor Case Study award for the Flexible Packaging Segment. Baldwin Chief marketing and IoT officer Steve Metcalf presented a futuristic case study detailing the metrics and ROI of the winning scenario for a printer of the future with all of its presses “Amp’d.”
Additionally, Metcalf was interviewed by Linda Casey, editor of Packaging Impressions and Printing Impressions magazines, to share his insights on what the future could look like with the emergence of Industry 4.0 data platforms for the global packaging industry.
Baldwin’s experts were on hand to inform DPS participants about the AMS Spectral UV X Series™ line of LED-UV curing solutions, offering the highest curing speeds, reliability, and choice in multiple format sizes for flexo, offset and digital printing. The ROI for switching to LED-UV has never been greater, and there is no better way than an LED press retrofit to invest in sustainability and the safety of the working environment for the future of packaging.
Also in the spotlight at DPS was Baldwin’s Guardian PQV 100% print inspection technology, which provides easy-to-use variable content verification. The PQV can accept up-front data files containing all expected content and verify that every code or personalized data is printed correctly. Where codes are defective, the PQV can provide a report identifying the failed codes so they can be reprinted. Guardian PQV eliminates every print error with a more efficient, accurate, data-connected inspection workflow and provides complete print quality verification from prepress through production, reporting and archiving.
Finally, DPS set the stage for Baldwin to share the details of its revolutionary Industry 4.0 platform, AMP IoT, which quickly connects the data from machines, accessories, MIS software and workflow to obtain a holistic view of production and OEE, regardless of make, model or vintage of the assets. Printers and converters can access “real-time” production data, insights and analytics in the context of their customers and jobs, and set thresholds and alerts to improve quality, productivity and minimize downtime.
“Data and automation from connected machines and devices will drive the next great advantage in the graphics industry. At DPS, in addition to the proven advantages our leading technologies in surface treatment, curing and inspection can offer printers and converters, we were excited to showcase what augmented intelligence and Industry 4.0 can do to drive new levels of OEE (overall equipment efficiency) and quality in labels, flexible and carton packaging, and corrugated printing,” said Baldwin Chief Marketing and IoT officer Steve Metcalf. “It is great to be back at shows and events, and the sold-out nature of the DPS conference is a good sign for the industry.”
